Summary: | Bacterial infection is the most common infection that occur in the society. The problems with
consuming antibiotics are the possibility of bacterial resistance and a lot of side effects that may
occur. Drugs derived from plants are often expected to increase the potency of antibiotics.
Turmeric is commonly used traditionally and one of its active substance is curcumin. Based on
previous study, curcumin has been proven to have antimicrobial effect and in this research

their potency, such as neomycin sulphate, chloramphenicol palmitate, ciprofloxacin,
trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, ampicillin trihydrate and tetracycline hydrochloride. To test the
combined effects, three methods were used and the correlations were observed. The first
method was the determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) and Minimum
Bactericidal Concentration(MBC) from each antimicrobial substance. The combination effects
were determined using paper strip, paper disk and time kill curve. The MICs value of neomycin
sulphate, chloramphenicol palmitate, tetracycline hydrochloride, trimethoprim,
sulfamethoxazole, ampicillin trihydrate, ciprofloxacin and curcumin towards S.aureus are 8; 32;
0,25; 256; 32; <0,015625; 0,125; 64 µg/mL accordingly. Meanwhile, the MICs value toward E.Coli
are 16; 64; 0,5; 64; 32; 8; 0,0625; 64 µg/mL accordingly. The MICs value were used to consider the
concentration of antimicrobial agent in the combination test. Based on the combination test
toward Escherichia coli, neomycin sulphate, chloramphenicol palmitate, ciprofloxacin,
sulfamethoxazole, ampicillin trihydrate and tetracycline hydrochloride combined with curcumin
yielded additive antimicrobial effect. Meanwhile, trimethoprim combined with curcumin yielded
synergistic effect toward Escherichia coli. The combination of those antibiotics with curcumin
yielded additive antimicrobial effect when tested toward Staphylococcus aureus.
