Hypertension can inhibit the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the tissues. Mostly, hypertension is caused by poor diet such as high consumption of salt in food. People usually use traditional plant to reduce blood pressure for example celery, garlic, cucumber, etc. Pluchea indica L. (Beluntas) is a plant that is widely used as a hedge that is very easy to get and also there are no data on its benefit as an antihypertensive. This study aimed to test the antihypertensive activity of ethanolic extract of Pluchea indica L. leaf. The active compounds from beluntas leaves were extracted using Soxhlet method with 96% ethanol as solvent. The experiment was conducted on male Sprague Dawley rats that were induced with a combination of 2% NaCl 0,2 g/kg bw and 1,5 mg/kg bw prednisone orally once a day for 14 consecutive days. Extract 100 mg/kg bb, 300 mg/kg bw and 2,25 mg captopril were given orally once a day for 7 consecutive day. Sistolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured the day before induction (H0), after induction (H7 dan H14), and after administration of the extract (H21) using non-invasive direct tail-cuff CODA Instrument®. Results showed that the rats increased in SBP (p<0,05) after 7 days of induction. The two doses of extract reduce SBP (26,7% for low dose and 26,4% for high dose) and DBP (31,6% for low dose and 30,0% for high dose) significantly (p<0,05) after 7 days extract administration. The two doses of extract gave similar potention as captopril in reducing SBP and DBP. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the two doses of beluntas leaf ethanolic extract have antihypertensive effect. text
