Summary: | Diabetes mellitus ranked second as non-contagious diseases in Indonesia, therefore it is necessary
to develop drugs that are capable of treating diabetes. Various herbs have been widely used by
the people of Indonesia for treating diabetes and among them are minnie root herbs and star
gooseberry leaves. This study aims to examine the antidiabetic activity of the minnie root herbs
ethanolic extract (EEHP) and star gooseberry leaves (EEDC). The active ingredients from simplicia
minnie root and star gooseberry were extracted by reflux method using ethanol. Activity test
carried out on male Swiss Webster mice induced diabetes by alloxan monohydrate through
intravenous route and the decrease in blood sugar levels were observed by using glucose strip
test. Since alloxan may damage the pancreatic beta cells as free radicals, the antioxidant in the
extract was also tested by using DPPH method. Result on DPPH test showed IC50 of minnie root
and star gooseberry leaves extracts i.e. 2.57±0.72 and 16.96±0.25 µg/mL, respectively. After 14
days, test on diabetic mice showed EEHP and EEDC at dose of 140 mg/kg body weight can
reduced blood glucose level i.e. 43.6 ± 1.5 and 40.6±12.6 %, respectively and at the dose 280
mg/kg body weight can reduced blood glucose level i.e. 37.7±8.5 and 32.9±7.1 %, respectively.
Based on this results, it can be concluded that minnie root herbs and star gooseberry leaves
ethanolic extract can be developed into the herbal drug to treat diabetes mellitus.
