STUDY OF MULTIPHASE FLOW CHARACTERISTICS IN OIL AND GAS PIPELINE PRODUCTION NETWORK

Fluid flow characteristics in the oil and gas production pipeline vary and often cause problems that have an impact on the the production process continuity. The gas and liquid segregated flow along the pipeline does not have a significant impact on downstream facilities, whereas intermittent flo...

The gas and liquid segregated flow along the pipeline does not have a significant impact on downstream facilities, whereas intermittent flow patterns such as slugging can affect the performance of the operating unit at downstream facilities. Multiphase flow behavior can be assessed using a model with the right selection of existing correlation methods. The multiphase flow characteristics in oil and gas production pipeline have been reviewed in this study by the steady state flow characteristics model. The pipe flow model in this study was built using the combination of Begg and Brill correlation for horizontal pipes and Aziz et al. correlation for vertical pipes with 10% average error. The fluid flow from 7 wellhead platforms flowing in 4 production pipelines aat XYZ field was discussed in this study. Slug flow regime was identified in the pipeline 3 during low and lowest production rate at 60% and 80% water cut. The slugging mitigation technique was also discussed in this study, namely the riser base gas injection and topside choke at top riser. Both of these techniques can be used to mitigate slugging in pipeline 3 where the fluid flow was dominated by liquid. Gas injection at the riser base of 3 MMscfd can change the flow regime from slug flow to transision, meanwhile choke valve at 20% to 30% open are able to tranform the vertical flow regime from slug flow to bubbly flow in pipeline 3. text
