Description
Summary:Chicken eggshell is a frequently found household wastes and has a highly calcium carbonate content. In general, calcium carbonate is used as abrasive in toothpaste formula. The purpose of this experiment was to develop a toothpaste formula with chicken eggshell powder as an abrasive. Particle size of chicken eggshell was reduced to 5-20 µm using cutting mill, mortar grinder, and tumbler ball mill in 75 rpm for 15 minutes. Toothpaste formula was developed based on variation of xanthan gum, sodium lauryl sulphate, and eggshell powder concentration. The formula was evaluated include organoleptic characteristic (color, odor), determination of pH, viscosity, detergency ability test, cleaning ability with debris score determination. As for final formula, moisture content, and accelerated stability test using climatic chamber in 40 ?C and humidity 75%. After optimization process, the optimum formulation of toothpaste containing chicken eggshell powder as abrasive consists of 1,2% xanthan gum, 2% sodium lauryl sulfate, 50% chicken eggshell powder, 12% glycerin, 8% propylene glycol, 0,2% titanium dioxide, 0,4% menthol, 0,2% sodium saccharine, 0,18% methyl paraben, 0,02% propyl paraben. During storage in 40?C there is no change in color and odor of the pasta. The result of statistical analysis using t-student method indicated there was no significant difference (p>0,05) in pH. However the viscosity was increasing during storage. The optimum formulation of toothpaste containing chicken eggshell powder as abrasive based on evaluation result of organoleptic, determination of pH, viscosity, detergency ability test, cleaning ability with debris score determination, moisture content, and accelerated stability test using climatic chamber (40 ?C) was obtained. Debris score of the final formula is 0, equal with calcium carbonate toothpaste.
