Summary: | Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis is a common abnormal skin condition occurs on the scalp.
The disorder is characterized by flaking and itching which caused by a fungal infection
Malassezia furfur. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis therapy aims to reduce the number of
M. furfur in the scalp, reducing in morbidity, and avoid complications. Ocimum basilicum or
basil plant is a plant that has many benefits such as cough medicine, pesticide plant, essential
oil, vegetables, and beverages. Essential oils of O. basilicum act as an antifungal. Basil
essential oil contain linalool, fenchol, eugenol, metal chavicol, and acaryophyllene. This
study aimed to determine the antifungal activity of ethanol extract of basil herb to inhibit the
growth of dandruff fungus M. furfur, determine the diference between extract ethanol basil
herb and ketoconazole in inhibiting growth of M. furfur, and also determine the equivalence
between extract ethanol basil herb and ketoconazole. Parameter ethanol extract of basil herb
activity against M. furfur is determined by measuring the diameter of inhibition using agar
diffusion method. Then, the concentration of minimum inhibitory is determined by
turbidimetry method and compared with ketoconazole. The ethanol extract of basil herb had
activity to inhibit the growth of dandruff fungus M. furfur with minimum inhibitory
concentration 25 mg/mL. The equivalence concentration between ethanol extract of basil
herb and ketoconazole is 1 µg ketoconazole equivalent to 714.29 µg of ethanol extract of the
basil herb. The ethanol extract of basil herb had antifungal activity to inhibit the growth of M.
furfur. The minimum inhibitory concentration of ethanol extract of basil herb was 25 mg/mL.
Ethanol extract of basil herb 714.29 µg was equivalent with ketoconazole 1 µg in inhibiting
the growth of M. furfur.
