Summary: | Kidney is one of vital organ which belong to urinary system. Renal failure occurs when the
kidneys are unable to perform excretory functions which are important in maintaining
homeostasis. Breadfruit leaves are commonly used empirically for the treatment of renal
failure. This study aims to determine the influence of ethanol extract of breadfruit leaves to
improve renal function in a renal failure rat model. Renal failure model was conducted by
administering gentamicin with a dose of 100 mg/kg bw rats intraperitoneally for 7 days
consecutively and piroxicam with the dose of 3.6 mg/kg bw for five week which is started
together with gentamicin. Breadfruit leaves extract were given for four weeks of therapy at
a dose of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg bw began after gentamicin induction. Renal function
were evaluated by measuring urea and creatinine serum levels at the beginning of study
and every week, and it was followed by renal histology at the end of the experiment. After
induction, urea and creatinine serum levels increase by five times than normal levels that
different statistically (p < 0.05). During the treatment period, serum level of urea and
creatinine in all group decreased on third week. There was a significant difference in urea
and creatinine serum level in rats treated by 200 mg/kg breadfruit leaves. Histological
results depicted an improvement of the kidney structure, especially on group of 200 mg/kg
showed the most significant improvement. Ethanolic extract of breadfruit leaves improved
kidney function in the renal failure rat model induced by gentamicin and piroxicam which
was showed by reduction on the level of serum urea and creatinine, and improvement on
kidney structure. Breadfruit 200 mg/kg bw showed better activity on ameliorating renal
function according to this conducted research.
