THE EFFECT OF VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF NEW CASE TUBERCULOSIS PATIENTS

The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is increasing with a high mortality rate. The severity of symptoms and impact of TB can affect patient quality of life. Several studies showed that vitamin D defficiency could decrease the immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The objective...

The severity of symptoms and impact of TB can affect patient quality of life. Several studies showed that vitamin D defficiency could decrease the immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The objective of this study is to determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation to the quality of life (QoL) of new case TB patients using St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). This SGRQ consist of 3 domains, i.e, symptoms, activity, and disease impact. This study was carried out using a paired numerical analytical. Each group consist of 16 new case positive-smear TB patients. The test group received 800 IU of vitamin D per day beside standard antituberculosis drugs. Result showed that vitamin D supplementation increased the quality of life of new case TB patients with NNT of 3.2. This value means that there is one of every 3 new case TB patients received 800 IU of vitamin D per day will increase there quality of life. The sputum conversion was higher in the vitamin D group compared to the control group, i.e., 14(87,5%) vs 4(25%). Analyses of the three domains score of SGRQ of vitamin D group showed that there was a very significant improvement of patient QoL indicated from symptom score: 50.04±11.39 vs 12.46±12.04 (p=0.001), activity: 66.81±22.97 vs 27.00±17.02 (p=0.000), disease impact: 64.82±20.91 vs 11.63±13.94 (p=0.000), and the SGRQ total score: 62.87±18.5 and 16.43±13.06 (p=0.000). While the SGRQ score of the control group was no different during study indicated from score for symptom: 46.42±17.34 vs 37.66±20.77 (p=0.127), activity: 62.12±17.54 vs 56.17±17.99 (p=0.435), disease impact: 57.12±18.81 vs 41.67±21.15 (p=0.050), and the SGRQw total score: 55.97±15.89 and 47.33±18.05 (p=0.214). During study thare was also no symptom of 800 IU vitamin D supplementation side effect observed. In conclusion, vitamin D supplementation with a dose of 800 IU per day for one month could increase the QoL of new case TB patients significantly. text
