Description
Summary:In petroleum industry there are several components that rub against each other sush as impellers and shaft. Wear resistance is one of the important aspects in this component. Wear resistance can determine the service life of components while there is a reduction in mass due to swiping. Monel K-500 is a nickel alloy that can be improved by its mechanical properties through the process of strengthening precipitation soit has good strength, toughness and it is suitable for wear-resistance components. Testing of friction wear resistance is to determine the effect of variations in heat treatment precipitation hardening and time of swiping on the Monel K-500 using a pinon-disk friction test method. Wear resistance is evaluated by measurements of lost mass, hardness test, and microstructure changes using an optical microscope and SEM. The difference in hardness value around 10% is caused by grain size resulting from different heat treatment precipitation hardening. Mass reduction occurs significantly in the initial 4-6hour test period and decreases relatively in the next time span. The microstructure of the test material has not changed due to friction testing. The surface hardness increases around 1-3% because it is indicated that strain hardening occured. The detachment of Ni3Al precipitates at grain boundaries can trigger the initial cracks seen in SEM observations. Variation in heat treatment precipitation strengthening does not have significant effect on increasing the wear resistance of the Monel K-500 because the mass reduction is only 0.3%.
