Description
Summary:Antioxidants are compounds that are easily oxidized because they can give electrons, thus inactivating free radicals. Red guava (Psidium guajava L.) contains phenolic and flavonoid compounds, thus potentially occurring antioxidants activity. This study was expected to determine the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), the antioxidant activity of guava leaves and twigs with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, to analyze the correlation of TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity index (AAI) DPPH, and to prepare an article review about chemical composition and pharmacological activities of Psidium genus. Guava extraction was carried out by reflux method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Moreover, the AAI determination of DPPH, TPC and TFC were performed by UV-visible spectrophotometric method. Article review preparation was conducted by collecting, selecting, and analyzing literatures. TPC of guava leaves and twigs extracts were in the range of 2.03 ????24.57 g GAE/100 g. TFC of guava leaves and twigs extracts were in the range of 1.91 ????7.3 g QE/100 g. Antioxidant activity of guava leaves and twigs extracts showed AAI DPPH in the range of 0.76 ????14.49. Total phenolic content had positive and significant correlation with AAI DPPH of guava leaves and twigs extracts. A review article was prepared by considering and analyzing 80 literatures. The highest TPC was seen by ethanol leaves extract (24.57 g GAE/100 g), while the highest TFC was achieved by ethyl acetate leaves extract (7.30 g QE/100 g). Ethanol and ethyl acetate leaves extract shown as very strong antioxidants by DPPH method. The phenolic compounds contributed in antioxidant activities of sample extracts. Based on literature review, Psidium genus is known to have many chemical compositions and pharmacological activities.
