Summary: | Obesity and overweight occurs when there is an imbalance between energy intake and energy
expenditure over time resulting in increased energy storage. Nowadays there are some medications
have been used to treat obesity, however there is a limit to their long-term application because of
severe side effects. Many studies have confirmed that herbal medicine is effective in the treatment
for obesity. This literature review performed to compile data of Indonesia's herbal plants that have
been reported in the past decade used search engine Google Scholar and Pubmed with antiobesity
activities proved by pre-clinical or clinical studies and have the potential to be alternative drugs from
orlistat. Journal selected based on inclusion criteria such as international journal or national, with
English or Indonesian language, published in the last ten years, full text or free full text. Exclusion
criteria such plants didn’t cultivated in Indonesia, an isolate, or effect from combination of several
herbs. From the search result, 30 herbal medicines from 20 Famili that are useful for weight loss or
antiobesity were selected such as Allium cepa L., Allium fistulosum L., Allium sativum L., Aloe vera (L.)
Burm. f., Annona muricata L., Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis., Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze.,
Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat., Coffea Arabica L., Cosmos caudatus Kunth., Crocus sativus L.,
Curcuma longa L., Eleutherine bulbosa (Mill.) Urb., Ficus carica L., Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Garcinia
mangostana L., Glycine max (L.) Merr., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Hibiscus sabdariffa L., Momordica
charantia L., Morinda citrifolia L., Morus alba L., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.,
Oryza sativa L., Phaseolus vulgaris L., Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr
& Perry., Tamarindus indica L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe. From 30 herbal medicine, only 13 have
passed clinical trials. Some of them can be recommended for further studies by looking the
parameters of the dose, duration, and the design trial. The results indicate that Zingiber officinale
Roscoe and Crocus sativus L extract can induce weight loss in a short time period and in low dose
without side effect.
