Summary: | PT Bara Kusan production reached of 28.38 million tons in 2019. From those 28.38 million tons coal, only 18.5 million tons are crushed by PT Bara Kusan owned crushing facilities, the remaining 9.88 million tons are crushed by third-party crushing facilities.
Crushing cost using third party’s crushing facilities per ton coal is IDR 37,461 higher than using PT Bara Kusan owned port and crushing facilities.
With the world’s economic growth being slower due to Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19), especially China and India, the need for coal also lesser, which imposing significant threat to the Indonesian coal oversupply which is signaled by the decrease in coal price trending in the previous months to the lowest level since 2016 at USD 24.15 / ton for ICI 4 coal (PT Bara Kusan coal).
Decreasing OPEX by decreasing proportion of coal crushed by third party’s crushing facilities is the key factor for the company to survive during the pandemic. One way of doing that is by increasing PT Bara Kusan crushing capacity by reducing crushing plant defects. The six-sigma method is used for identifying defects and reducing it. The data collection method uses quantitative method by taking samples from production data and qualitative method by interviewing 6 respondents. |
