Summary: | Urbane Indonesia is a well-known architecture firm in Indonesia. Two of their works are Al
Safar and Jami’e Darussalam Mosque. Both have become discussion materials due to their
designs which considered to be different from most of mosques in Indonesia. Al Safar Mosque
has been nominated in Abdullatif Al Fozan Award, which shows mosque designs around the
world. Whereas Jami’e Darussalam Mosque has been considered to be a solution for
limitedness of a comfortable space for pray in its environtment. This research’s purposes are
to identify the architecture-interior typology and user’s perception of space in Al Safar and
Jami’e Darussalam Mosque. The methodology used in this research is qualitative with
comparative study. Informations about Urbane and both mosques have been gathered using
biography method and have been confirmed through interview with Urbane. Observation has
been done to identify the architecture-interior elements in Al Safar and Jami’e Darussalam
Mosque. Historical method has been done to explain mosque typology in the world, especially
in Indonesia. The sources of mosque typology theories are from Martin Frishman, Syaom
Barliana, Fauzia Latifa and Yulianto Sumalyo. Whereas the sources of perception of space
theories are from Fauzia Latifa and Bert Bielefeld. Comparative study has been done to
compare architecture-interior elements in both mosques with mosque typology in the world
and in Indonesia with typo-morfology method. An interview to the user have been done to
understand the perception of space. Although Al Safar and Jami’e Darussalam Mosque’s
designs have been considered as new and different by public, yet their designs is actually still
fulfil the requirements of mosque building based on Qur’an and Hadith. The typologies of both
mosques is also can not be qualified as new, because they have been used in several mosques
in the world and Indonesia. In the entrance and the prayer room, the typologies are
monumentalism and contemporer modernism. These typologies affecting the perceptions of
space which are comfortable, amazed, khusyuk, solemn and formal. Whereas in supporting
rooms such as toilets, the typology is functionalism. This typology is also affecting perceptions
of space which are comfortable and formal.
