ADSORPTION OF PB(II) USING COCOA BEAN SHELL (THEOBROMA CACAO) ADSORBENT ACTIVATED BY HNO3
Lead is one of the polluting heavy metals produced from industry. Lead ion can pollute the environment and have a negative impact on health if it enters the body. Lead ion can pollute the environment and have a negative impact on health if it enters the body. Therefore, a research was carried out on the manufacture of adsorbents using cocoa bean shells which will be activated first with nitric acid. Cocoa bean shell is a lignocellulose waste which contains the main components in the form of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. The high cellulose content in the skin of the cocoa pods has the potential to be further processed into adsorbents to deal with the problem of water pollution by waste contaminated by heavy metals. The cellulose structure of the pod husks was confirmed by means of FTIR. Cocoa pod husks were activated by acid with the addition of HNO3 0.6 M. Adsorption was carried out with variations in optimum parameters such as pH, adsorbent mass, initial concentration, and contact time. The adsorption study was carried out by determining the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics. The experimental results show that the optimum conditions are achieved when pH is 3, the adsorbent mass is 0.050 grams, the initial concentration of Pb(II) ion is 200 ppm and the contact time is 60 minutes. The adsorption process follows the Freundlich isotherm model. The results of the kinetics study showed that the adsorption follows a pseudo second order kinetics. text |
