Summary: | The national plastic industry sector is one of the contributors to the revival of national manufacturing
growth. Due to a large number of plastic manufacturing companies in Indonesia, the Indonesian plastic
industry has a significant share. The number of plastic companies in Indonesia is around 925 companies.
It is because the demand for plastic products in the last five years has increased by an average of 5 per
cent per year.
With such conditions, it is an excellent opportunity for plastic entrepreneurs to provide the best value
supply they can offer. Essential values for obtaining maximum profit are competitive prices and highquality
products. To provide a competitive price, most companies have it. However, for high-quality
products, not many companies can provide it, and the impact is the failure to survive.
PT XYZZ is currently one of the companies that have issues related to product quality. It can be seen
based on the level of defective products that occur in 2019 to the first quarter of 2020. Based on available
data, it is known that employee performance is the leading cause of current defective products. The decline
in performance occurs due to gaps in defined competencies and violations of standard operating
procedures. Actions taken currently related to defective products by PT XYZZ are only by imposing
sanctions, cutting wages, and terminating employment contracts. It is considered to have no significant
impact on existing defective products.
i
Therefore, it takes training and development as a step that is considered adequate and efficient for the
company in the short term and the long term. So far, the training and development provided by the
company are deemed ineffective, and there are still many problems. The existing evidence regarding the
ineffectiveness of training and development is currently seen based on the results of the 2018 to 2019
performance appraisal, where there has been a very significant decrease in performance.
Based on this, the training and development program at PT XYZZ was analysed through interviews and
focus group discussion with related parties within the company. The discussion uses the five steps of
training and development by Gary Dessler, 2016. After analysing interview and FGD, it is known that
there is indeed a gap between the training and development conditions that have been carried out by the
company and what the company should do in conducting practical training and development. Most of
these occur because companies do not use needs analysis.
Furthermore, after the interview, it can be identified that the writer found that there are several things that
PT XYZZ needs to improve. PT XYZZ must increase employee knowledge in the company, which is
related to standard operating procedures, machine repair knowledge, basic knowledge of English. PT
XYZZ must conduct training related to employee skills in communication, leadership, teamwork,
problem-solving, and awareness or sensitivity in organizations. PT XYZZ must also develop motivation
and self-control in each individual in the company.
After carrying out all the training and development activities, the authors provide some suggestions in
evaluating the effectiveness of training and development that are followed by employees. The training and
development program will be implemented in 2021, in between 6 and 12 months, depending on the level
of difficulty of each training and development theme carried out. Training and development are carried
out jointly and sporadically to all employees in the operational department. To ensure that if the training
and development are useful and beneficial for the participants, training and development must be carried
out by a trainer or instructor who understands the training practically and theoretically, understands it in
substance, and has experience in the field of training and the development. |
