The accumulation of food waste can become source of disease, hence it is necessary to treat this type of waste. The purposes of this research are to overcome the food waste problem by reducing bulk volume of waste to reduce transportation fleets, and to prepare the waste as an anaerobic digestion material to produce biogas. In the early stages of this research, food waste which quantity and composition has been identified will be processed with three types of simple waste treatment to reduce bulk volume of food waste, namely thermal process, mechanical process, and thermomechanical process. Each experiment is done using tools commonly found at home which are pressure cooker and blender. After completing simple waste treatment, product compatibility as anaerobic digestion material will be tested. The result of the experiment has shown that thermomechanical process achieves the highest bulk volume reduction, which is 83%, and has best product as anaerobic digestion’s material. Although thermomechanical process has many advantages, it requires higher energy than conventional garbage transport. Therefore, mechanical process is chosen as a home scale treatment for food waste because it has high bulk volume reduction, which is 71%, and requires less total energy than conventional garbage transport, which is 82 kJ/kg. text |

Food waste is organic waste that is produced directly or indirectly by human being.
As a result of the COVID 19, the frequency of waste transfer has been decreased causing
cumulation of waste at homes/ waste transfer station. The accumulation of food waste can
become source of disease, hence it is necessary to treat this type of waste. The purposes of
this research are to overcome the food waste problem by reducing bulk volume of waste to
reduce transportation fleets, and to prepare the waste as an anaerobic digestion material to
produce biogas.
In the early stages of this research, food waste which quantity and composition has
been identified will be processed with three types of simple waste treatment to reduce bulk
volume of food waste, namely thermal process, mechanical process, and thermomechanical
process. Each experiment is done using tools commonly found at home which are pressure
cooker and blender. After completing simple waste treatment, product compatibility as
anaerobic digestion material will be tested.
The result of the experiment has shown that thermomechanical process achieves the
highest bulk volume reduction, which is 83%, and has best product as anaerobic digestion’s
material. Although thermomechanical process has many advantages, it requires higher energy
than conventional garbage transport. Therefore, mechanical process is chosen as a home scale
treatment for food waste because it has high bulk volume reduction, which is 71%, and
requires less total energy than conventional garbage transport, which is 82 kJ/kg.
