Description
Summary:Abstract:

This research develops a model for determining a production run length and process improvement for a deteriorating system. The production process of the system may go from in control state to out of control state randomly and can be detected only through inspection at the end of the production run. If the state of the process is out of control then the process is restored. The intensity function of the occurrence of out-of-control is considered as an increasing function of x (the length of time the system is in control state). Two intensity functions are examined i.e. linear and non linear functions.

Non conforming items produced while the system is out of control state are greater than that at in control state. If the change of the state occurs short after the productions run starts then the restoration cost and warranty cost will increase. In order to decrease the costs, process improvement is done. The process improvement is aimed to prolong the time of in control state by decreasing the intercept parameter (ao) of r(x; ao) .
The optimal production run length (t*) and the intercept parameter of r(x; ao) (a, *) are obtained that minimize the expected total cost per item.

The condition where t* and a, * exist is given and numerical examples to illustrate the optimal solutions are presented.
