Summary: | Beside to produce oil or gas, each production sharing contractor (PSC) including the Maliha Minyak
Indonesia (MMI) has obligation to restore ex-location of oil and gas wells and eliminate the
environmental impact by performing Plug and Abandonment (P&A).The total P&A Wells executed
by MMI are 164 wells in 2020. This number is lagging 5 wells from the total 169 wells that shall be
executed in 2020. One of the procedures that very unpredictable, takes a longer duration, and budget
from the target is Initial Killing Job. Based on 159 well executions from 2016 to 2020, initial killing
takes in an average of 15 hours with a deviation of 30 hrs. While the target stated in P&A programs
is only 4 hours. Most of the deviation occurs in the P&A execution on steam injector wells
Using the conceptual framework, there are at least 6 contributing factors to the initial killing process
in steam injector such as well control risks, barriers, kill fluid materials, operation rigors, well
formation characters, and human capability. From the swim lane diagram, initial killing process
contributes to about 90% of potential delay hours in overall P&A job execution. The root cause
analysis is evaluated using the Current Reality Tree based on interview and observation. There are 6
root causes that contributes to the prolonged initial killing process. 2 of 6 root causes (i.e
incompatibility fluids and generalized SOP) are the major contributors of the initial killing delays
which will be evaluated later.
The wells in Duri Steam Flood (DSF) have characteristics of loss formation. Through a Focus Group
Discussion, the team identified 7 potential alternatives to resolve the incompatibility fluids during
the initial killing process. The evaluation of the best alternatives is identified using Kepner-Tregoe
scoring matrix. The offline cementing job for initial killing is evident as the best alternatives which
fulfil all the must attributes and have the highest score of want attributes. Beside a cheaper cost, this
alternative has a high success ratio to plug the formation and contributes to the main cementing job.
In order to have an alignment with the proposed alternative, the current SOP for initial killing shall
be revised.
This initiative is already implemented in 3 P&A injector wells execution with total benefit
USD48,031 from the reduction of rig operation rate and elimination of kill fluid materials.
