Summary: | The oral cavity is a part of body that suitable for growth of microorganism such as bacteria. Bacteria
that grow in the oral cavity can cause oral infections with the symptoms bad breath, dental caries,
parotitis, etc. In previous studies, betle leaves (Piper betle L.) and senggugu leaves (Clerodendron
serratum (L) Moon.) showed antibacterial activity against some oral bacteria. Besides, betel leaves
been widely used to maintain the health and hygiene of the oral cavity. The objective of this research
was to determine the type combination of betle leaves extract and senggugu leaves extract against
bacteria that infected oral cavity including Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus using in
vitro method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of both extracts against Streptococcus
mutans and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were determined by microdilution method and minimum
bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were determined by agar diffusion. The results showed that the
MIC and MBC value of betel leaves extract against Streptococcus mutans were ????g?mL and
?????g?mL, respectively. The MIC and MBC values were same against Staphylococcus aureus. The
MIC and MBC value of senggugu leaves extract were ????g?mL and > ?????g?mL against
Streptococcus mutans. The MIC and MBC values of sengugu extract were ?????g?mL and
?????????g?mL againts Staphylococcus aureus. The characteristics of extract combinaton were
determined by paper ribbon method, time kill curve and checkerboard microdilution. Based on the
result of interaction test between betel leaves and senggugu leaves extract against Streptococcus
mutans and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were additive, that the antimicrobial effect is the sum of
each single effect.
