Leakage Current (LC) identification is commonly used to diagnose the
insulator’s health, whether it is in good or bad condition. This research reports the
result of LC identification of insulator under salt fog condition. An electrical
equivalent circuit of insulator was proposed to simulate the LC waveform. The
simulation was done using ATPDraw software. The simulation result would be
validated for its magnitude, waveform, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and
dominant harmonic number. Simulations were conducted on four clusters of
insulators, which are uncoated ceramic insulator, coated ceramic insulator, epoxy
resin insulator and silicone rubber polymer insulator. The results show that the
insulator characteristics could be identified by analysing the pattern of the obtained
electrical parameters from each condition. The salt fog conductivity, pollutants, and
relative humidity have a significant effect along with the applied voltage level in
reducing the quality of the insulator. Polymer insulators have the finest surface
resistance quality compared with the other clusters. Intrinsic capacitance tends to
decrease as the applied voltage increased, while surface capacitance varies
according to the arc position. The phenomenon prior to flashover of an insulator
could be indicated by complex non-linear characteristics and severe arcing. |
