Summary: | As one of the countries with the main staple food consumption of rice, Indonesia has a high level of rice consumption. This is directly proportional to the population of Indonesia which is ranked the fourth largest in the world. Indonesia's geographical conditions that meet the criteria for rice cultivation mean that the production or availability of rice in Indonesia is quite large. However, Indonesia still imports rice from other countries. Until now, food security issue still a topic of discussion and is trying to be realized. According to FAO (1996) and UU RI No. 18 of 2012, there are four indicators that affect food security, namely: adequate food availability, stability of food availability, accessibility to food and food quality / safety. In Indonesia, food security is also synonymous with the availability and need for the main commodity (rice) or what is known as food balance. This study aims to model areas that experience a surplus or deficit in rice based on rice demand and the availability of rice in Indonesia. The novelty in this research is using spatial data from remote sensing and use of GIS technology, such as modeling of rural urban areas, crop water requirement data and the level of plant greenness (vegetation index). The results of this study indicate that there are 8 provinces in Indonesia that experience a rice deficit and 26 other provinces that experience a rice surplus in the 2013-2018 average.
