Summary: | The stratum corneum is the outermost barrier that protects the body against penetration of chemicals
and microbes. The stratum corneum layer then became a challenge in the development of the topical
delivery system. For both topical drugs and cosmetics, it is desirable that the active substance remains
in the epidermis for a sufficiently long time to obtain the desired effect without reaching the
circulatory system. This literature review aimed to analyze the potential of the use of lipid-based
colloidal carriers in the form of solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers in topical
drugs and cosmetics made from natural ingredients. The search for data relevant to the topic of
literature review was carried out through the Google Scholar search engine and the PubMed database.
This literature review included a summary of the latest developments in lipid-based colloidal carriers
in natural-based topical drugs and cosmetics, analysis of the effects resulting from the implementation
of these lipid-based colloidal carriers, regulation of nanoparticles, and prediction of prospects for lipidbased colloidal carriers in topical drugs and cosmetics. and regulation of nanoparticles. Based on the
results of the literature review, there were several advantages of lipid-based colloidal carriers, namely
the occlusion effect, increased penetration, increased drug stability, increased drug-skin contact time,
and decreased drug side effects. Lipid-based colloid carriers have been widely used in topical drugs
with various indications as well as in cosmetics such as sunscreens, moisturizers, antioxidants, and
antiaging.
