Summary: | SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), a contagious disease that has
spread worldwide, causing a global health crisis. Other than COVID-19, there are also other diseases
caused by pathogen transmission by hands. To prevent it, keeping hand hygiene by washing hands
with soap is a measure that has been proven effective. If water and soap are not available, hand
sanitizer can be an effective alternative that also can be easily used. WHO recommends alcohol
based hand sanitizer because its wide microbicidal spectrum, and concentration over 60% is
effective to kill SARS-CoV-2. The literature study aims to analyze hand sanitizer formulation and
the possibility of betel leaves extract fortification in hand sanitizer to increase its antimicrobial
activity. A literature study for alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel formulation incorporating betel leaf
extract was conducted. Papers were collected from search engine and electronic databases Google
Scholar and PubMed. Datas were extracted and informations were collected to be analyzed. Betel
leaf extract possesses medium to strong antibacterial activity, which is caused by its component,
eugenol and hydroxychavicol. Some papers stated the compatibility of ethanol, Carbopol 940,
triethanolamine, and glycerin for alcohol-based hand sanitizer formulation that could produce a
stable and well-accepted product. Suitable method for alcohol-based hand sanitizer making is direct
addition or reverse addition, which depends on available equipment for production. Moreover,
formulation of alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel formulation incorporating plant extract has been
proven to increase the antibacterial activity of preparation towards pathogen. Based on the
component analysis, betel leaf extract, tocopherol, ethanol, Carbopol 940, triethanolamine, and
glycerin can produce hand sanitizer gel with good effectivity and stability thus further research
should be conducted.
