Description
Summary:Recently, the use of synthetic antibacterials is concerned due to the emergence of antibacterial resistance as a global health problem. In addition, the long-term use of synthetic antioxidants is known to be harmful to health. This has prompted many researchers to look for new sources of antibacterial and antioxidant properties derived from natural ingredients, especially those from essential oils. Patchouli oil is an essential oil obtained from the patchouli plant (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) which is known to have antibacterial and antioxidant activity. However, direct use of patchouli alcohol is not good enough due to its instability and volatility. This literature review aims to study the effect of formulations in nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) on stability, antibacterial and antioxidant activity and the design of patchouli oil NLC formulations. Literature search is carried out using search engines and electronic databases Google Scholar and PubMed, then the data obtained is extracted and analyzed according to the purpose. Patchouli oil has antibacterial and antioxidant activity due to its high content of patchouli alcohol. In previous studies, the encapsulation of essential oils in NLC has been shown to its improve stability, antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Due to the volatility of essential oils, suitable method for the preparation of NLC of essential oils is emulsification-ultrasonication. Various studies have revealed that the use of surfactants combination can improve the stability of NLC. Based on the literature review, a patchouli oil NLC formulation was designed with glyceryl monostearate, cocoa butter, cetyl palmitate as a solid lipid, virgin coconut oil or olive oil as a liquid lipid, tween and lecithin as surfactants. Based on the results of the component safety analysis, the formulation is designed to be non-irritating and safe for topical use. Optimal NLC formulation can be applied to overcome the instability and volatility of patchouli oil so as to increase its potential as a better antibacterial and antioxidant compound from natural ingredients.
