Description
Summary:The trend of using medicinal plants to treat various diseases in Indonesia is quite high, but the information regarding the safety of their usage has not been widely found, even though the usage of these plants can either be synergistic or antagonistic with a standard therapy for a disease. A previous study has shown that Ocimum basilicum L., Persea americana M., Cymbopogon citratus (DC. ex Nees) S., Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) P., and Solanum melongena L. have antihypertensive activity. Thus, this study inventories and analyzes the pharmacological effects of these plants as an alternative or adjuvant therapy. This literature review was done by screening journals on PubMed and Google Scholar using certain keywords and inclusion criteria, obtaining a total of 151 journals for further analysis. The results show that these plants have potential to be used as an adjuvant therapy, such as Ocimum basilicum L. for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction, liver fibrosis, and tuberculosis; Persea americana M. for tuberculosis, diarrhea, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and liver disorders; Cymbopogon citratus (DC. ex Nees) S. for dyslipidemia, tuberculosis, hypertension, liver disorders, and diabetes mellitus; Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) P. for hypertension, liver disorders, and diabetes mellitus; Solanum melongena L. for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, liver disorders and dyslipidemia. The test conducted on Ocimum basilicum L. has reached preclinical stage while Persea americana M., Cymbopogon citratus (DC. ex Nees) S., Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) P., and Solanum melongena L. have reached clinical stage.
