The subservience and addiction to technology along with the reduction of green spaces in urban areas have caused problems in human relations, especially children with nature. This issue becomes a concern when it is found that there is a link between the destruction of the natural environment and the distance between humans and nature, which also has a negative impact on human health. For the past few decades, global warming and environmental degradation is a
global issue that has always been discussed and sought for a solution by the
community. The lack of awareness of modern society, especially in urban areas, of
the importance of protecting the natural environment and the rapid pace of
industrial and technological development exacerbate the problems that occurred.
The subservience and addiction to technology along with the reduction of green
spaces in urban areas have caused problems in human relations, especially
children with nature. This issue becomes a concern when it is found that there is a
link between the destruction of the natural environment and the distance between
humans and nature, which also has a negative impact on human health. If this
continues to occur, it will not only cause damage to nature, but also human health
conditions.
The disengagement between children and nature along with the environmental
damage is keeps worsening, therefore the solution for this problem must be applied
in a more holistic approach. For instance, education approach which can connect
children with nature because early childhood education has a very important role
in building the rationale and maintaining one's basic knowledge. Education with
the Montessori method gives children the freedom to choose the concepts they want
to learn for themselves. In this research, the writer intends to design a formal
education facility with Montessori curriculum through a biophilic design approach
that can help to solve these problems.
The design concept that the writer chose is evolving with nature. By applying the
Montessori educational method and a biophilic design approach, the writer used a
design concept which breaks down into the organization of space, shape, color,
material, furniture, lighting, air conditioning, and atmosphere in order to form
biophilia which is integrated in an urban context.
