The result of the analysis were three root causes and the issues regarding the production loss related to VRU downtime could be mitigated by solving any one of those three root causes. In order to solve either one of the causes three separate possible alternatives were proposed; purchase a recent model of VRU, modify the operations of the existing AWE compressor, or relocate an idle compressor unit from other facilities. In order to reach the decision on which alternative to choose, the author utilized Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with Pairwise Comparisons. Surveys was given the SME’s to determine the priorities in criteria as well as the relation of each alternative based on those criteria. From the aggregated results of all the SME’s the results obtained was that the alternative to purchase a more recent model of VRU is the best alternative as it has the highest weighted score. text |

Currently, PTN Gas Plant processes associated gas from the gas boot of PTN Gathering
Station. The associated gas is processed through the Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU) gas
compressor before further handled by the larger AWE gas compressor. After the gas is
compressed, cooled and separated it is then delivered through the outgoing pipeline and
towards the gas turbines where it will be utilized as fuel to produce electricity for the
operation.
Over the last year the VRU gas compressor have encountered repetitive failures which
causes an increase in the downtime of the equipment. The increase in downtime causes to
a decrease in the gas production of PTN GP since in the current operation the associate gas
recovered from the gas boot must be processed through the VRU before the gas is
processed by the AWE compressor. The decrease in production due to VRU downtime is
the underlying business issue since it causes a decrease in the potential profit from the gas
plant.
The author implements a Problem Tree Analysis in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with
the Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to determine the potential root causes of the business
solution. The result of the analysis were three root causes and the issues regarding the
production loss related to VRU downtime could be mitigated by solving any one of those
three root causes. In order to solve either one of the causes three separate possible
alternatives were proposed; purchase a recent model of VRU, modify the operations of the
existing AWE compressor, or relocate an idle compressor unit from other facilities.
In order to reach the decision on which alternative to choose, the author utilized Analytical
Hierarchy Process (AHP) with Pairwise Comparisons. Surveys was given the SME’s to
determine the priorities in criteria as well as the relation of each alternative based on those
criteria. From the aggregated results of all the SME’s the results obtained was that the
alternative to purchase a more recent model of VRU is the best alternative as it has the
highest weighted score.
