Summary: | PT XYZ has initiated to do vendor development programs. However, the
competenve & performance of vendors is still has not met the target. Therefore,
PT XYZ seeks to find critical factors in improving the competence and
performance of vendors in order to produce a partnership that strengthens and
benefits one another. This study aims to develop a vendor development strategy
model, which can improve vendor competence and performance, through the
mediation of relationship learning. In particular, this research contributes to the
development of vendor development strategies, based on vendor assessment,
competitive pressure, and direct involvement strategies, which are based on the
growth of vendor competencies and performance.
Data analysis in this study uses a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach
with partial least squares (PLS) technique because this research is predictive with
managerial implications. This study applies saturated sampling because the
population is small and easy to reach. Data collection was carried out by
distributing online questionnaires to all logistics vendors of PT XYZ. This
research model was analyzed based on 30 data. The result shows a positive and
significant effect of vendor development activities in the form of vendor
assessment, competitive pressure, and direct involvement on relationship
learning. Furthermore, relationship learning shows a positive and significant
effect on vendor competence. Meanwhile, vendor competence has a positive and
significant impact on vendor performance. In the end, this research provides
direction for vendor development strategies that can be carried out by PT XYZ as
follows:
a. Conduct periodic vendor assessments accompanied by transparency of the
evaluation process and providing feedback.
b. Creating a competitive climate through competitive pressure based on
clear and fair rules of the business.
c. Increase direct involvement of vendors oriented to human resource
development and process improvement through new innovations towards
jiritsuka or vendor independence.
d. Establishment and optimization of PT XYZ's logistics vendor community
as a means of building sustainable relationship learning through a series
of comprehensive development activities.
