The Zanthoxylum genus is a part of Rutaceae family and comprises about 200 species. It is widely distributed in Asia, America and Africa. Zanthoxylum is used in Asia as both condiment and traditional medicine. A literature review was conducted to study chemical constituents and pharmacological activity of eight species of the Zanthoxylum genus that are traditionally used in Asia. This literature review reffered to scientific articles that are published in 2010-2021, Englishwritten, Scopus-indexed, have DOI and contain information regarding the chemical content and pharmacological activities of eight species of Zanthoxylum genus. Article searching used search engines such as Google Scholar, Hindawi, MDPI, PubMed and ScienceDirect. Literatures showed that the Zanthoxylum genus contain Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Coumarins, Lignans, Terpenes and other compounds. Zanthoxylum also has various pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticancer, etc. More studies are needed regarding preclinical studies and the active compounds in plants that provide these pharmacological activities.
