INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/61962 Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease caused by carbohydrate metabolism disorders and is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Traditional herbal medicines are widely used in several countries to treat chronic and non-communicable diseases such as DM. Katuk (Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr.) has been widely used by Indonesian people as a lactation enhancer. In India, katuk is known as an antidiabetic agent. There have not been many studies related to katuk leaves in lowering blood sugar levels. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the hypoglycemic effect of katuk leaf extract using a glucose tolerance test and collect current data on plant extracts that have the potential as antidiabetic. In the glucose tolerance test, mice had fasted, and the initial glucose level (t0) was measured. The experiment groups were given 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW of katuk leaf extract. The control group was given 2.5 mg/kg BW of glibenclamide. After 30 minutes of samples administration, mice were given 3 g/kg BW of glucose. Blood glucose levels were measured every 30 minutes until the 180th minute after glucose administration. The data were analyzed statistically using the SPSS application. The literature review was conducted by searching the literature with certain keywords and inclusion criteria on the PubMed and ScienceDirect sites. The blood glucose levels of mice in the katuk leaf extract group at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW were not significantly different from the positive control group. Katuk leaves extract at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW could not prevent increased blood glucose levels. From the literature study, 27 journals were obtained, which were then analyzed further. The Thymus is the genus with the most plant species in the family Lamiaceae, exhibiting an antidiabetic effect. Methanol was the most widely used solvents in the plant extraction process, with antidiabetic effects. text |
