Summary: | Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) is a program established as a harm reduction of the use of
syringes alternately or recklessly among opioid or drug injecting users (IDU). Methadone is a potent
synthetic opioid agonist which is well absorbed orally and the effects of methadone are qualitatively similar
to morphine and other opioids. Therapeutic efficacy determined by several factors, such as pathological
condition of the patient, appropriate dosing of methadone, and interaction between methadone and other
drugs consumed by the patient. Objective of this research is to identify drug interaction on patient of
methadone maintenance treatment in relation to therapeutic efficacy. This research is a descriptive research
and was done retrospectively by collecting data from medical record of active Methadone Maintenance
Treatment patients in February 2012 until February 2013 with total patients were 63 persons. 66,67% patient
used antiretroviral drug and there were 9 drug classes used by the MMT patients to treat their psychological
condition or other diseases. 40,58% patient used benzodiazepine, 28,98% antibiotic, 4,35% antipsychotic,
5,80% proton pump inhibitor, 4,35% analgesic, 2,90% antidepressant tricyclic, 2,90% vitamin, 2,90%
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, and 7,24% other classes (antifungal, antivirus, mucolytic agent, and
corticosteroid). This research showed there were 43 drug interaction incidences among MMT patient with
each type of interactions were mayor 9,30%, moderate 65,12%, and minor 25,58%. According to the result of
this research, there still were drug interactions among methadone maintenance treatment’s patient and less
supervision about drug used by the patients. Active pharmaceutical care and counseling are needed to prevent
and reduce drug use that potential to interact between methadone and other drugs.
