LITERATURE STUDY OF CARBON PASTE ELECTRODE MODIFIED BY BROMTHYMOL BLUE (BTB) FOR BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE (BHA) LEVEL DETERMINATION BY VOLTAMMETRY
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is one of many chemical compounds that is often used as an additive compound on foods. This compound can also be used as an antioxidant to prevent the food from oxidative rancidity. However, the consumption of this compound has a maximum intake of 0,02% based on the re...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/62616 Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is one of many chemical compounds that is often used as an additive compound on foods. This compound can also be used as an antioxidant to prevent the food from oxidative rancidity. However, the consumption of this compound has a maximum intake of 0,02% based on the report from the Food & Drugs Association (FDA). Consumption of BHA that exceeds the maximum intake poses a risk of serious allergy, cancer and other negative effects. Therefore, there is a necessity to develop a method with high sensitivity to determine the amount of BHA. The determination of the amount of BHA that is reported in the past 5 years was done by the method of gas chromatography, amperometry, and voltammetry. Voltammetry is one of the methods that can be used because BHA is an electroactive compound. This research was done by doing a literature study about the determination of BHA with voltammetry technique using bromothymol blue (BTB) as a modifier. This literature study has the objective of continuing the result of the previous research that shows the usage of BTB was successful in increasing the sensitivity of BHA measurement. BTB modified carbon paste electrode is widely being developed in voltammetric measurement due to its excellent sensitivity, selectivity and stability in measurement. In its development, this modified electrode has been widely used in the world of medicine in relation to disease analysis such as the detection of dopamine and uric acid rates. The result of this literature study shows electropolymerization as one of the modification techniques that is able to increase the sensitivity of analyte measurement. The usage of BTB as a monomer shows electrocatalytic effect in the measurement of several analytes that shows the similarity of intermolecular force with BHA. One of the efforts to increase the sensitivity and selectivity towards BHA can be done with the technique of molecularly imprinted polymer. In its modification, it is needed to optimize a few parameters such as the composition of electrode and number of electropolymerization cycle. In its performance determination, it is needed to optimize a few parameters such as selection of supporting solution, pH of measurement, and voltammetry technique. text |
