Summary: | Food waste is an urgent problem to be solved, considering its bad environmental
impact and landfills in the study area are nearing full capacity. Part of food waste,
namely excess food that is still fit to be eaten, is still wasted even though food insecurity
and malnutrition are still a problem in the study area. The emergence of community
food redistribution initiatives in the form of food banks in Indonesian urban areas is
a topic that needs attention in urban sustainable development. This is because food
banks try to solve the problem of SDG 2 on hunger elimination and SDG 12.3 on
halving food waste by bridging excess food to people in need. The analysis used in this
paper is qualitative analysis to explore and understand the meaning of the
phenomenon that occured. Based on the analysis, the development of food banks in
the study area is in accordance with existing policies, the pattern of food banks in the
study area is similar to the pattern of food banks in the literature, and food banks have
contributed to the achievement of SDG 2 and SDG 12.3 to a limited extent. The results
show that food banks can be integrated into the food waste management system as an
alternative to the current approach. However, given the criticism and limitations of
food banks in overcoming hunger, policies related to food banks need to be
accompanied by strengthening the existing social security system and emphasizing the
principle of human rights to proper food in food bank activities. |
