The decrease of petroleum amount could lead to an energy crisis. Thus, alternative energy resources are needed to substitute petroleum. One of the alternative energy resources is bioethanol. To produce bioethanol in optimum amount and low production cost, a cheap carbohydrate resource and potential yeasts are needed. A candidate for the cheap carbohydrate resource is cashew apple. The purpose of this research is to isolate and screen the wild type yeasts from cashew apple (Anacardiae occidentale, L.) for bioethanol production. In this research a wild type yeast with high ethanol and glucose was isolated. The tolerant of the yeast to ethanol and glucose is 9 % v/v and 22 % b/v respectively. Identification of the yeast showed that the species of the yeast is Saccharomyces telluris. The optimum fermentation condition is carried by the yeast at pH 4,6 and temperature 37 oC. The Saccharomyces telluris was inoculated into cassava and molasse and it was proven to be a bioethanol producer. The isolated Saccharomyces telluris is potential to be used in bioethanol production. text
