Description
Summary:Nowadays smoking habit has become a popular life style that has touched all segments of society in developed and developing countries, also men and women, regardless of sex and age. Most of the smokers smoke regularly because of nicotine addiction. Some of the behaviors of the smokers can make addiction worse. However, those behaviors/habits can be improved by an intervention such as taking candy. In this study, tamarind and herbal candies were selected as a supplementary tool for behavioral interventions in smokers or nicotine addicts. Tamarind and herbal candies, which have been in the market, were investigated for their role as supplementary tools of behavioral intervention to increase abstinence from smoking. Thirty five volunteers of smoking students and workers in Bandung were divided into tamarind, herbal, and control groups. Smoking subjects received the following procedure: personal instruction, filling in smoking questionnaire, analyzed during one-week observation of abstinence time for each treatment (tamarind and herbal candy), and retrieve subjective opinion taken after both treatment. The data were processed using statistical analysis One-Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD. In general. tamarind and herbal candy have no significant difference (p>0,05) in affecting the duration of smoking abstinence. However, when volunteers were divided according to the severity of smoking, heavy smokers, among all volunteers (n=5) showed results that different significantly (p<0,05) from control on day 1, 5, 6, and 7 after herbal candy treatment. When herbal candy group was compared to control and tamarind candy group, it had significant difference (p<0,05) on the third and fourth days. This result suggests that herbal candy produce a reliable increase abstinence in nicotine addicts and can be used as a supplementary tool to help quit smoking.
