Some of them are the use of tetraethoxyorthosilane (TEOS) precursors with a base catalyst, sodium silicate precursors using an acid catalyst and the addition of surfactants. The addition of surfactants can make the silica shape more spherical (mechanically stable) and controlled in size. The types of surfactants used were tween 20, tween 80, triton x- 100, CTAB, SDS, and sarcosil. This study aims to see the effect of various silica synthesis methods on the resulting silica product. The resulting silica can be further modified using propylamine because is used as a linking unit to attach other functional molecules.Characterization of modified silica and silica particles was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Silica synthesis from TEOS precursor and sodium silicate precursor was successfully carried out, indicated by the presence of asymmetrical and symmetrical Si-O-Si absorption bands in the wave number region of 1180 cm-1 and 804 cm-1, Si- OH absorption band at 947 cm-1, 1639 cm-1, and 3365 cm-1 and the absorption band around 480 cm-1 indicates O-Si-O. Silica has also been successfully modified with (3- Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and obtained an absorption band -NH- at a wave number of 1531 cm-1 and an absorption band -CN- at a wave number of 2374 cm- 1, indicating the modification was successful. Based on the results of SEM measurements, silica and propylene modified silica with TEOS precursor have a spherical shape with a size of about 1?m. The particle size of silica and silica modified by propylamine with sodium silicate as precursor has a size larger than 10 m with irregular shape. The addition of CTAB surfactant to the TEOS precursor did not produce a significant difference in the FTIR spectrum but the effect on its size has not been reviewed. The use of surfactants on sodium silicate precursors shows that CTAB is able to help the formation of silica. The use of tween 20, tween 80, and triton showed the formation of silica after the addition of acid. For SDS and sarkosyl surfactants the desired silica product was not formed even though acid was added. text |
