Summary: | Micellar water is a nonsterile cosmetic product with water as the main ingredient, which vulnerable
to microbial contamination. One of the strategies to protect micellar water products from the risk
of microbial contamination is the addition of preservatives. 2-phenoxyethanol has been known as
a preservative in the formulation of cosmetic products. Objective: This study aimed to determine
the content and effectiveness of 2-phenoxyethanol that is used in the formulation of micellar water
products in Indonesia. Methods: The preservative content assay was carried out using a reversephase HPLC instrument. The antimicrobial effectiveness testing was carried out using the principle
of challenge test for contamination-free products against five tested microbes. Results: The
determination of the 2-phenoxyethanol content in six micellar water products is in a range of 0.551
to 0.767% w/w. The use of 2-phenoxyethanol with a concentration of 0.705% was proven to protect
micellar water products from bacterial contamination and the use of 2-phenoxyethanol with a
concentration of 0.767% was proven to protect micellar water products from bacterial, yeast, and
mold contamination. Conclusions: (1) The content of 2-phenoxyethanol in six micellar water
products meet the maximum level required by the Badan POM RI (2) The use of 2-phenoxyethanol
with a content of 0.767% w/w proved effective to protect micellar water product from microbial
contamination.
