A microemulsion has a lot of advantages compare to coarse emulsion such as its optical transparency appearance, thermodynamic stability, enhanced hydrophobic drug solubility and has a better skin penetration due to its smaller particle size. This preparation normally composed of water, oil, surfactant and cosurfactant. The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize a stable microemulsion of olive oil as a vehicle and ketoconazole as a model of active ingredient for topical use. Tween 80 and ethanol in various combinations were used as a surfactant and cosurfactant component. Glycerin was also added to formula as second cosurfactant. Ketoconazole was solubilized in ethanol before added to the microemulsion. The microemulsion characteristic was evaluated by measuring pH, viscosity, and droplet size and freeze-thaw physical stability for 24 days. The result showed that stable and transparent microemulsion was obtained from the composition of 6% olive oil; 38% of Tween 80; 9,5% of ethanol; 31% of glycerin and 15,5% of water. This formulation can loaded 0,4% of ketoconazole. <br />
