This study employs phenomenology as a research method in which in-depth interviews with a number of female leaders and their male counterparts in a prominent technological university in Indonesia are conducted. The literature in leadership underlines that there are several masculine traits that are associated to high leadership competency. However, the finding of this study shows that such traits are not necessarily only owned by male leaders but also female. To be considered as competent in a male dominated workplace, female leaders must possess traits that are suitable to the assigned tasks and there should be institutional support that can assist female career advancement. Based on these findings, practical implications are then suggested.
