Therefore, it is important to do research and development of gas turbine, one of the component of those power plants. The author conducts research about the preliminary design of the M701D gas turbine, to obtain many parameters at this step, so the study of gas turbine development before detailed design process could be conducted. For the first step, the author did the parametric study to obtain the parameter of design point performance from the specification, including the estimation of thermodynamic properties. Based on that result, the compressor and turbine were designed using mean-line design method. The combustion chambers were designed using zero-dimensional analysis. The preliminary design results were validated using GASTURB software, as well as comparing them to the gas turbine specification. Based on this research, the performance parameters of the preliminary design of gas turbine were obtained with net work output of 140.4 MW, thermal cycle efficiency of 34.55%, pressure ratio of 14, heat rate of 10418 kJ/kWh, and mass flow rate of 463.1 kg/s, with those values approximately close to the M701D gas turbine specification, along with the compressor design with outer diameter of 2,4 m and turbine design with outer diameter of 2,8 m and combustor volume 1,457 m3 to fulfill the design. The author hopes that this research could be used for educational purposes as well as for the study of gas turbine development. text
