Description
Summary:Individual lifestyles are caused by work, environment, and household structure changes in urban communities. One of the growing individual lifestyles today is solo dining. Solo diners are people who carry out consumption activities alone in public places. The motivation to become solo diners is to have the freedom to choose the time and place to eat, enjoy alone time, and the unavoidable conditions like a traveller. However, it is known that solo diners still find it challenging to carry out consumption activities alone. This is because the cafe design has not fully accommodated the needs of solo diners, so solo diners have an unpleasant experience. The visibility in the space creates a situation for solo diners to feel observed and monitored by visitors to social diners. The situation is related to the social anxiety of solo diners. This study aimed to determine the effect of partition design and lighting on the social anxiety condition of solo diners. This research was conducted using a quantitative method with a quasi experiment approach that displays nine stimulus conditions using virtual reality (VR). Experiment data were processed and analyzed using ANOVA to determine the difference between stimulus conditions. The analysis results show that the partition design and lighting effect social anxiety for solo diners. The most effective design combination to overcome social anxiety from solo diners is a combination of lattice partitions, 162.6 cm height, and dim lighting.
