Description
Summary:The manufacturing process in the manufacture of metal components usually produces side effects such as residual stress. The presence of residual stress in a component can affect the formation of crack initiation. In the case of a railway company, fatigue failure occurred at the threaded base of the switch rod of turnout. It is suspected that the failure was caused by the presence of residual stresses from the component manufacturing process. In this study, two samples of handlebar parts from different vendors were used. The stress relief annealing treatment process was carried out with temperature variations of 520 oC, 560 oC, 600 oC, 640 oC, 680 oC with holding times of 30 minutes and 60 minutes. Furthermore, the residual stress measurement test was carried out using the Xray mode cos a method, hardness testing using the Vickers method and metallography using a light optical microscope. The test results show that there is tensile residual stress on the neck of the machining process near the thread. The stress relief process carried out success in reducing the tensile residual stress in the section, accompanied by a decrease in hardness and insignificant grain enlargement.
