Summary:Significant changes that occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic affect people's lives very quickly. In the education sector there is a transition in the transfer of knowledge from offline to online method. After two years of the pandemic, there was an adaptation of the two learning methods into a hybrid. Health protocols such as the use of masks need to be carried out strictly to avoid the spread of the virus. However, the hybrid method learning process with some students in the class wearing masks will complicate the knowledge transfer process because the speech sound from the teacher and students is considered to be disturbed thereby reducing the level of understanding received by students. This study aims to see the effect of masks on the quality of speech intelligibility in a class. In this study, measurements were carried out in the TF 2 classroom on the 4th floor. In order to represent the conditions of the offline method in the classroom, measurement based on the impulse response method is carried out as a first step to evaluate the condition of a classroom. Then, it is followed by measuring the Speech Transmission Index (STI) parameter using a source from Artificial Mouth with white noise and a microphone as a receiver. In addition, the Acoustic Camera is also used to view the distribution of sound energy. There are 13 variations of masks, five variations of distance, and two variations of sound pressure levels that will be evaluated. The results showed that variations in the type and layer of masks did not significantly affect the clarity of speech sounds. The decrease in speech intelligibility in the TF 2 classroom on the 4th floor is more due to the condition of sound reflection in the classroom. The change in STI value is mainly due to the distance between the sound source and the listener and the sound pressure level from the sound source. In general, the use of masks will not reduce the clarity of speech, but only change the character of the voice and distribution of the voice of the speaker.
