EXPERIMENT OF THE EFFECT OF BIOGAS PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT (POME) COMPOSITION ON COMBUSTION AND EMISSIONS OF DUAL FUEL DIESEL ENGINES

Indonesia, which has high energy needs and consumptions, results in the depletion of non-renewable natural resources and increasing impact of environmental damage. This encourages the idea of reducing and limiting the use of fossil energy and replacing it with renewable energy. One of the potential...

This encourages the idea of reducing and limiting the use of fossil energy and replacing it with renewable energy. One of the potential energy sources to be developed in Indonesia is biogas from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) because Indonesia is the largest producer of palm oil with a total production of 46.88 million tons of CPO in 2021. The use of this fuel in dual- fuel diesel engine utilizes the energy produced by combustion and reduces the greenhouse gas impact of releasing biogas directly into the air. In this study, the parameters of combustion and emissions resulting from the use of POME biogas were tested. The fuel variations are the percentage of biogas energy use, methane content in POME biogas, as well as the applied torque. It is hoped that the effect of the use of POME biogas and its variations on the combustion and emission parameter can be found. From this test, it was found that the use of POME biogas reduces the cumulative heat by 1.19% to 9.07%, retarded the ignition delay from 0.23° to 0.32° CA, decreases NOx emissions by 0.14% to 43.46%, and reduce the opacity from 35.50% to 94.64%. Therefore, the use of POME biogas in a dual-fuel diesel engine will reduce the combustion parameters and better exhaust gas emissions. text
