Summary: | Tidung Island is one of the islands that has dual functions as a residential area and commercial tourism area. The changes caused by tourism on Tidung Island also provide changes to the emotional bonding of the residents which can also affect their support for the development of tourism in this region. Therefore, this research is intended to explore the resident’s place attachment of Tidung Island and its relation to their support for the development of tourism. In this study the age factor is used as a predictor of determinants of the resident’s place attachment which is distinguished in four age groups.
Empirical analysis uses a constructivism approach with qualitative methods. The selection of a qualitative approach because this study will provide in-depth understanding of how the place attachment of residents who live and live in tourist areas and their relationship with their support for the development of tourism in the region. The data collection techniques used are literature studies, field observation, and semi-structured interviews. The interview was conducted on December 12th, 2022 to January 4th, 2023 with local residents of Tidung Island as a research informant. Sample determination is done using stratified purposive sampling. The analysis technique used in this study is a qualitative descriptive data analysis technique.
The findings show that resident’s place attachment of Tidung Island has a different level. The adolescent and late adult resident’s place attachment are at the level of belonging to a place, residents in middle adults’ group are in identifying with the place goal, and the residents in early adults’ group are at the level of involvement in a place. The findings explain that this level of difference is due to differences in their opinion on the dimensions of place dependence and nature bonding. This study also found a negative factor that decreases the population place attachment.
The findings also show that the resident's place attachment was related to their support for the development of tourism in Tidung Island. Place Attachment is a fundamental for residents to connect with their residence and to get to know more deeply every aspect in it. This knowledge and relationship can be used as part of the development and implementation of tourism in community-based areas.
This study suggests guidelines for stakeholders to consider the local place attachment approach in developing tourism in Tidung Island. Considerations related to this emotional relationship can also be used to improve the welfare of the local community by minimizing negative things that can affect the resident’s place attachment.
