There has been significant improvement in access and infrastructure development, creating various economic opportunities for the local community. One of them is Lintong Coffee, a leading commodity of plantations in North Sumatra. Lintong Coffee Shelter is an integrated facility covering an area of 7424 sqm, with 3 main functions: processing, education, and leisure. The project is located in Lintong Nihuta District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, which is the original production area of Lintong Coffee. The significant advantage of the site is an unobstructed view towards Lake Toba and the Coffee Plantations. This project embraces the overarching theme of Irama Bukkulan. ‘Bukkulan' is also known as the distinctive roof end points of traditional Batak houses. This theme is implemented through the positioning of entrance points and outdoor spaces, carefully considered to provide the best vantage point for viewing the silhouette of the roofs. There are four buildings arranged in a radial pattern, centered around an amphitheater. The main building is large in volume and accommodates the educational and leisure functions, while the three smaller supporting buildings house the coffee processing functions. The four buildings are interconnected through pedestrian paths on the ground floor and a sky bridge on the first floor. The split-level concept is applied to the main building in response to the existing topography, with ramps serving as the main vertical circulation paths. The three-story building structure utilizes a conventional reinforced concrete column-beam system, while the ramps have a separate structure, supported by a steel cable framework on the rooftop. To respond to the local heat and rainfall, a second skin facade is applied on the west side, visually harmonizing with the roof, and overhangs are used on the east, north, and south sides. text |
