Summary: | Cosplay is an activity that involves wearing costumes and playing roles to represent a character from a work of fiction. Cosplay, as Japanese popular culture worldwide, has grown rapidly in Indonesia and has a number of communities spread across major cities in Indonesia with different backgrounds in life. Events involving cosplay activities in Indonesia usually have cosplay competitions in the form of regional to national-level stage performances, one of which is the Indonesia Cosplay Grand Prix (ICGP), which is a prestigious national-level cosplay competition in Indonesia that is held annually. This study aims to examine the adaptation of the embodiment of Japanese fictional characters into physical works by Indonesian cosplayers participating in the ICGP competition in the 2017–2019 period, which focuses on designing the costumes of the participants by considering design principles. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the costumes designed by Indonesian cosplayers for the ICGP competition experienced adaptations in form, material, and technique, and it can be concluded that there is an application of design principles in each participant's cosplay costume. |
