INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/74303 The spice trade that occurred in the early 14th century gave birth to a route and network formed as a result of interactions, leading to the exchange of knowledge, culture, religion, and experiences. In East Indonesia, Buton became one of the regions that served as a spice trade route and acted as a connecting point between small towns around the island of Buton. It also served as a transit area between traders from East Indonesia and West Indonesia. However, there is a lack of concrete evidence indicating that Buton was once one of the regions included in the spice trade route in Indonesia. This research aims to examine the history of spice trade in the city of Baubau in relation to settlement patterns and its infiuence on architecture. The research method employed is descriptive-qualitative using a historical approach. The research findings indicate the existence of a dual power structure, resulting in the formation of different settlement patterns between the Sultanate of Buton and the Dutch East Indies government. Additionally, there is a lack of connectivit y between these two historical areas in the city of Baubau. text
