Summary: | Commercial areas play a crucial role as a hub for commodity exchange
among communities and as a busy and dynamic economic center that adds value to
the overall urban environment. Therefore, commercial areas need to be supported
by adequate facilities and well-planned spatial arrangements to ensure smooth
trade activities and provide comfort for area users. However, a common issue in
commercial areas is the lack of supporting infrastructure and poor accessibility,
which can negatively impact visitor interest in shopping. Pusat Pasar Kota Medan
is one part of the commercial areas in Medan City that faces physical issues, such
as inadequate facility quality, poor vehicle and pedestrian accessibility, and
inadequate supporting public transportation facilities.
One alternative to address the issues in the Pusat Pasar Kota Medan is to
redesign it to optimize its function as a commercial area. The redesign process
utilizes a fragmental method with problem-solving design techniques. It considers
the existing conditions of the area, its potential and issues, user perceptions and
preferences, as well as design guidelines and related literature on commercial
areas. The formulation of design policies for Pusat Pasar Kota Medan aims to
create a centralized commercial area with a pleasant atmosphere through the
provision of adequate facilities for trade activities and entertainment facilities for
recreational purposes, while considering accessibility, safety, security, comfort,
and aesthetics of the area. |
