One of the anthropogenic factors that threatens the vulnerability of Batam City is waste management, given the high population and intensity of economic activity in Batam City whose main economic activities are industry, trade and tourism. In contrast to waste management in large urban areas that can rely on regional facilities, waste management in island cities must be carried out in an integrated manner because of their isolated geographical characteristics with limited land, so a smart and sustainable solution is needed to increase the resilience of Batam City as an island city. This study aims to identify the level of smart and sustainable waste management in Batam City based on 5 (five) dimensions, namely governance, economy, social, environment and technology, as well as analyze appropriate waste management strategies to be developed. This study uses a qualitative approach with content analysis, scoring analysis, and weighting, as well as SWOT analysis to determine internal and external factors, and strategies for developing waste management. The results of the study show that the level of waste management in Batam City has reached an integrated level, has been going quite well, especially on the management, economic and social dimensions, but it needs significant improvement on the environmental and technological dimensions. Meanwhile, an appropriate strategy for developing solid waste management is a strategy for developing strength to deal with threats, which is focused on: (1) solving land problems for allocating waste facilities; (2) integration of marine waste management policies into regional waste management policies; and (3) increasing public awareness and participation. text |

description |
As an island city, Batam City has a fairly high level of vulnerability, both to climate
change and sea level rise, as well as to anthropogenic pressures as a result of
human activities which cause environmental degradation and resource decline.
One of the anthropogenic factors that threatens the vulnerability of Batam City is
waste management, given the high population and intensity of economic activity in
Batam City whose main economic activities are industry, trade and tourism. In
contrast to waste management in large urban areas that can rely on regional
facilities, waste management in island cities must be carried out in an integrated
manner because of their isolated geographical characteristics with limited land, so
a smart and sustainable solution is needed to increase the resilience of Batam City
as an island city.
This study aims to identify the level of smart and sustainable waste management in
Batam City based on 5 (five) dimensions, namely governance, economy, social,
environment and technology, as well as analyze appropriate waste management
strategies to be developed. This study uses a qualitative approach with content
analysis, scoring analysis, and weighting, as well as SWOT analysis to determine
internal and external factors, and strategies for developing waste management. The
results of the study show that the level of waste management in Batam City has
reached an integrated level, has been going quite well, especially on the
management, economic and social dimensions, but it needs significant improvement
on the environmental and technological dimensions. Meanwhile, an appropriate
strategy for developing solid waste management is a strategy for developing
strength to deal with threats, which is focused on: (1) solving land problems for
allocating waste facilities; (2) integration of marine waste management policies
into regional waste management policies; and (3) increasing public awareness and
participation. |
